Lights and Shadows: Caravaggism in Europe, London, 29 June - 31 July, 2015

Lights and Shadows: Caravaggism in Europe, London, 29 June - 31 July, 2015

This year’s summer exhibition titled: Lights and Shadows: Caravaggism in Europe, held over the course of London Art Week (3 – 10 July), brings together a carefully selected group of caravaggesque paintings, spanning the entire development of this vibrant artistic movement that dominated Europe throughout the seventeenth century. Our exhibition offers a rare opportunity to marvel over a diverse range of works painted by leading caravaggesque artists, and to acquire prominent examples belonging to a carefully assembled collection.

The exhibition aims to draw attention to Italian and European artists who explored this revolutionary artistic language in Italy. Highlights will include the much-discussed Saint Francis by Caravaggio, whose “radical naturalism” marked a turning point in the entire development of European painting. Moreover, the striking Saint John at the Fountain by Battistello Caracciolo will offer the exceptional chance to witness the discovery of a lost masterpiece. From the cradle of Caravaggism to its endless evolution, the present exhibition showcases a wide range of approaches to the style: the elegant French manner of Valentin de Boulogne’s Tavern scenes, the Baroque and elaborated compositions of Domenica Fiasella, as well as the peculiar synthesis of Flemish naturalism and caravaggesque tenebrism in the works of Abraham Janssens.

This inclusive, yet carefully curated exhibition will offer an exciting introduction to the caravaggesque manner to amateurs and enthusiasts, as well as new critical insights to expert collectors and connoisseurs.

The Splendours of Venice: view paintings from the Eighteenth Century, London, 1-24 December, 2014

This special exhibition marks the 100th year anniversary of Lampronti Gallery, founded in Rome by the present director’s grandfather in 1914 and now recognised as the foremost gallery dedicated to Italian painting in the United Kingdom.

The exhibition brings together more than thirty vedute that have been carefully assembled over the years by Cesare Lampronti, who has long been considered as one of the leading specialists in the field. The masters of the great tradition of Vedutismo - Canaletto, Bellotto, Marieschi and Guardi - are all represented here by key works that capture the essence of Venice, a city whose romantic canals and quality of light were never represented with greater sensitivity or technical brilliance than during the eighteenth century. Later interpreters such as Bison and Zanin reveal the profound influence that Canaletto and his rivals had upon future generations of artists.

The culture of reciprocity between the Italian Peninsula and England during the Grand Siècle, both in terms of a mutual admiration for each other’s physical surroundings and the exchange of artistic and financial property, is a key aspect of the history of Vedutismo, and continues to resonate to this day. Many visitors will recognise the corners of Venice represented in the paintings on display; we therefore hope that it will be of particular interest to London audiences, who we invite to enjoy the evocative and resplendent qualities of Venice, La Serenissima.
